Born in a displaced persons camp in Austria, raised by Ukrainian-speaking parents in post-WWII Minnesota, Leon Hushcha grew up skilled in the art of balancing between two cultures - like a tightrope walker maintaining balance on a stretched wire between two points.
Drawing and painting, from the age of five, became a balancing tool and the base of support - art became the moment of force.
Note the blue and yellow in this painting, representing the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and the striking points of red - representing blood.
